Elementary School

 

French elementary schools welcome students aged 6 to 11 across two cycles (Cycle 2 and early Cycle 3) and five grade levels: the preparatory course (CP, Grade 1), the elementary course 1st year (CE1, Grade 2), the elementary course 2nd year(CE2, Grade 3), the intermediate course 1st year(CM1, Grade 4), and the intermediate course 2nd year(CM2, Grade 5).

 

Elementary education focuses on mastering fundamentals: reading, writing, arithmetic, and respect for others.

Additionally, it emphasizes:

 

  • Cultivating intellectual growth, artistic sensitivity, manual skills, physical and sports abilities;
  • Introducing historical, geographical, scientific, and technical literacy;

  • Teaching a modern foreign language with exposure to linguistic diversity.
  • Developing autonomous and responsible use of media (especially digital media);
  • Promoting respect for individual identity, cultural heritage, and diversity;

Delivery jointly with family moral and civic education, including the acquisition and understanding of the shared values and symbols of the French Republic and EU (e.g., national anthem and its history) for the exercise of citizenship.
